Get to know some tips: Star Tips

Ingredients

- icing (follow the recipe here)

- disposable bags

- couplers

- star tips: 16, 28, 21, 32, 1M

Before to try your tips on the cake we strongly recommend to try them on a piece of wax paper to practise. What is important at the begining is to learn how to control the pressure and how much to sqeeze the icing bag.

You can use the star tips you like most, all the decoration we are showing here can be made with any star tips. We used the tip number 18 for these examples.

Make Stars. Hold the bag at 90degrees, being close to the surface but without touching it, and sqeeze the bag to form a star. Gently pull the bag up and stop to sqeeze.

Try to make a row of stars being consisten in shape and size. You can see that with the same tip, you can meke different shapes of stars.

Fill-in with stars. If you want to fill an area with stars you should make the raws staggered. Depending on the effect you want to have you can make the starts really close (so you won't see the cake under them) or more separate.

Rosettes. Hold the bag at 90degrees, with the tip slightly above the surface. Start to sqeeze the icing and move the tip in a tight complete rotation.

Sqeeze constantly the icing until you complete the rotation and stop preassure the bag, addressing the end of the rosette in the center, lift tip away.

S ribbon. Start like to make a rosette. Once you almost complete the rotation keep sqeezing and add a new rotation in the opposite sense close to the first one.

Sqeeze constantly the icing until you complete the second rotation. Stop preassure the bag in the center and lift tip away.

Zigzags. This is usually used to decorate the side of the cakes. So you will practise doing it on na orizontal surface but then you will have to do it on the vertical side of the cake. Hold the bag at 45 degeres, steadily squeeze it and move your hand in a tight up and down motion.

Question Marks. This is a common decoration for borders. Hold your bag at 45 degrees, steadily sqeeze it and make a question mark shape.

Bride. This is the simplest way to make brides. Hold your bag at 45 degrees and start the bride making a question mark. Then start to make a wave shape to give the impression of the bride. You can close the bride with an other question mark.
